Annie was born to Patrick and Mary Curtin nee Bellet in Lackamore townland, in the parish of Miltown Malbay, Clare. She was the youngest of 5 children. She emigrated with her sister, Mary, and her brother , Michael, in the early 1860s. She married Thomas Johnston on the 12 May 1871 in in St John's Church, Cromwell, Otago, New Zealand. NZ Marriage Registration Record: 1871/6288. Thomas was 29 years and Annie was 23 years. Thomas' occupation was recorded as farmer and bachelor on the certifcate and Annie as a spinster. Witnesses: Kate Comyn, Jacob Johnston, Michael Curtin. Thomas and Annie had 9 children - Margaret, Matilda, Isabella, Alice, Thomas, Frances, James, Elizabeth and Patrick.
Her death notice was published in the Lake County Press, Issue 2549, 1 October 1914: "The Cromwell Argus announces the death of Mrs Thomas Johnston, wife of a well known settler of the Lowburn district. Deceased who was 65 years of age, and a native of County Clare, Ireland, had resided in the district for 45 years. She was a sister of the late Mrs Thomas McEntyre, of Arrow."
