Daniel MacNevin, Gort, Co. Galway, born ca 1786 in Loughrea, Co. Galway, only son of Thomas MacNevin, Gort, Co. Galway and Elizabeth Walsh.

Daniel lived first at Rosepark and later at Ashfield. He first married Mary Donnellan of Ravensdale, Co. Kildare. When she died 13 March 1811, Daniel married Amelia or Emily Foster, second daughter of Robert Blake Foster, of Ashfield, near Gort on 3 May 1813.

After she died, he married Catherine, daughter of Thomas Shadwell, M.D. of Loughrea and Relict (widow) of Capt. George Ingham, RN on 22 November 1844.

Daniel held severaal positions in Galway, including Coroner, Commissioner in the Courts of Exchequer and Common Pleas, and at one point Acting Sub-Sheriff. Daniel MacNevin was Solicitor for (the Liberator) Daniel O'Connell. Daniel died 11 August 1846.

Thomas MacNevin, first son of Daniel MacNevin and Amelia, 1814 - 1848, was the author and Young Ireland Movement leader, and supporter of Daniel O'Connell. He married Ellis Letitia Blake, only daughter of Xaverius Blake of Oran Castle, Oranmore, Galway on 30 May 1840.

Richard Charles MacNevin, second son of Daniel and Emily Foster, became an attorney, author of legal book, and Registrar to Judge Keogh. He married Julia Waring.

  • Thomas MacNevin wrote a letter to Richard Robert Madden (the historian of the United Irish Movement) in which he claimed that the family was "distantly related" to Dr. William James MacNeven (the letter is in the Madden Papers at Trinity College Dublin). Thomas adds that his father, Daniel, will send Madden the details showing the family connection; but, I did find the letter from Daniel MacNevin to Madden. The National Library, Dublin has a portrait of Thomas MacNevin. The Library also has a collection of Thomas MacNevin's letters. My paternal family was related to the MacNevin's and Thomas lived on property (the "Mill Plot") in Oranmore owned by my grandfather.

  • Two small typos in my comments: Of course, Madden's volumes are on the United Ireland Movement — the

    1798 Great Rebellion; and I did NOT find Daniel MacNevin's letter to Madden. If anyone knows that Daniel's letter is extant, I would love to hear about it.
