Migrated to/Born in USA

Dennis Sheahan was born in 1828 and baptised at Shanagolden Parish by D. McCoy.

I believe Dennis was the third of six children born to John Sheahan and Mary Fitzgerald. He emigrated sometime between 1844 to 1850. There is a strong possibility he joined his older sister Anastasia (Sheahan) Reddan in Toronto, Ontario, however I have not found documentation. He arrived in Toledo, Ohio by 1852. He operated a grocery/saloon for a time and later worked for the railroad eventually becoming the "yard-master" at the port of Toledo.

He and his wife Mary McCarthy lived about two blocks from his brother, John, who also raised a family and worked for the railroad in Toledo.

His sister, Anastasia, and her husband, John Reddan (spelling became Redding) also moved to Toledo. John Reddan died in 1854.  Anastasia remarried and moved away with her new husband, Michael Clohesy. Dennis passed away in 1902 after falling down some icy steps.

  • Hello,

I am wondering if your ancestor could be the uncle to my ancestor, Denis Sheahan. I've been trying to find his birth and immigration records.  His parents are  listed on his marriage certificate as John Sheahan and Mary Madigan.

I see your ancestor's brother was John Sheahan and they lived in Toledo Ohio. Family lore is John and Mary Sheahan came to US and settled in Ohio when Denis was a baby, circa 1848.  I can't find any records to verify this. The first record I have of my ancestor is his civil war record, in which he joined a company out of Ohio. After the civil war he wound up in Rochester, NYand married Elizabeth Gilligan on June 10, 1869. Lived in Rochester until his death at 39 of a heart attack. He and Libby had 7 children: Sarah, John, Mary, Perry, Joseph James, Elizabeth, and Dennis.

The  following generation all spell their name as Sheehan, but all the records for Denis are Sheahan. I have no record of siblings, etc.

Would love to see if you have any more details on your ancestor's brother John.

    many thanks!

  • Hello - I am responding to the inquiry about John Sheahan who lived in Toledo after emigrating from Shanagolden Parish in County Limerick, Ireland around 1850. I have reviewed the information I have available and do not believe the brother of my GG Grandfather, Dennis Sheahan, is the John Sheahan who you are researching. John Sheahan who was my GG Granduncle married Ellen Shaughness and lived in Toledo until his death in 1909. I'm sorry I can't be of further assistance.

    Regards,

    Mark Sheahan
