Dominique was born about 1814 in County Donegal. He appeared on the manifest of the Ranger in June 1834. Two other McDevitts were listed on the ship, Charles 22 and William 28. The Ranger landed in Saint John, New Brunswick. In 1836, Dominique, along with about 15 other Irish Catholics settled in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia where he opened a tailor shop and was instrumental in the formation of the Catholic church.
