Edmond ("Ned") Drury was born about 1840 in Murher Parish, County Kerry, to Edmond Drury and Mary Frawley. The family lived in the Tarmons area and rented farmland from a local Protestant landlord. He had 4 siblings: James, Cornelius, Bridget and Margaret. Edmond, the father, died about 1850-1851, leaving Mary as a widow. Ned worked as a laborer until 1863, when he joined the Royal Irish Constabulary. He was stationed in eastern County Cork during his employment. In 1865, he decided to emigrate to America and resigned his position.
The reason for this was probably due to a sweetheart he had in County Kerry, who had emigrated to America in the early 1860's. Her name was Ellen O'Sullivan.
Ned arrived in New York City in 1865 and began working in various places around New York state as a farm laborer. Eventually he settled in Manhattan and married Ellen. Ned worked as a laborer for the remainder of his life. In 1874, Ellen gave birth to their only daughter, Mary. The family lived in Manhattan at various addresses. Ellen died in 1890 of pneumonia. Mary and Ned continued living together until Ned's death in 1908 of a pulmonary edema.
Ned's daughter Mary married soon after and moved to Washington, D.C., where she died in 1920. Ned, Ellen and Mary are buried at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York.
