Edward Cahill was born in Grangebeg, Kilcullen in 1877, the second child of Patrick Cahill and Maria Devine. He left school at 12 to work at the 'big house' and then went to London where he worked in the Irish Guards and as a Railway Policeman. He migrated to Australia in 1906 (supposedly because he knew war in Europe was inevitable and he didn't want to fight for England). His brother Bernard is said to have disappeared in Europe during WW1.
Edward met Mary Morgan (who was born illegitmate and named Mary Smith but later adopted her father's surname, Morgan) in Sydney around 1916 and they married in 1918. The Cahill and Morgan families were friends in Ireland and when Mary mirgrated to Australia her family wrote to her and informed her that Edward Cahill lived close by in Australia and so she sought him out.
Every Friday night at the Cahill home saw a gathering of local Irishmen and women for a music evening. Edward played the fiddle and the Irish Harp, both of which he brought with him from Ireland to Australia.
Edward was unskilled but taught himself enough to work as an engineer and went on to become a foreman for a bricking company.
He and Mary had three children.
Edward died in 1961.
