Edward J Hartnett was born in Killorglin around March, 1818. In the Killorglin parish records he is recorded as entry 90, number KY-RC-BA-342749, under the name "Ewan", a misspelling of the Latin abbreviation for "Eduardus". He had a twin brother. His father was Patrick Hartnett, and his mother was Margaret "Buony" Moriarty. Their farm was in the West Tulligbeg area, west of Killorglin itself.
Edward moved to the area of Bandon, Co Cork, as a young man and is listed as a witness for a friend's child's baptism there. He then departed for America, where he was married and died in 1879.
