  • Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so probably the MacCartney family were Methodists at that date. That chapel has baptism records from 1819 and marriages from 1836. Prior to those dates the congregation would have used the Churhc of Ireland for their baptisms and marriages. Unfortunately Grange of Muckamore COI has no records before 1845 so you probably won’t make any progress with them. Possibly worth checking Antrim COI as they go back to the 1600s. Copy held in PRONI.

Thomas’s farm in Oldstone is in Griffiths Valuation (1862). He had plot 3 which was a farm and 10 acres. (On the modern Oldstone Hill road.)

  • Hi Elwyn, HUGE thanks for this information. You have given me a great deal to go on. My father's mother was a Rowney (aka Roney and occasionally spelled Rooney) and her branch of the family settled in Carrickfergus later. It's been interesting tracing them back to this area with which I am not so familiar. Many thanks to you.  Denise.

  • Denise,

Thomas MacCartney died in 1861. Probate abstract:

The Will of Thomas Macartney late of Oldstone in the County of Antrim Farmer deceased who died 14 February 1861 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oath of Thomas Mullan of Balloo and James Marcus of Largracey both in said County Farmers the Executors.

The will itself is on the PRONI wills site.  It mentions his wife Elizabeth, unmarried daughter Margaret MacCartney plus Elizabeth MacCartney otherwise Roney, wife of Andrew Roney.

Eliza McCartney is listed on Oldstone till 1881, after which the occupants were “lodgers.”  She died in 1877 aged 80.  Farmers widow. Informant was M. MacCartney, also of Oldstone.

No MacCartneys in Oldstone in the 1901 census.

  • Hi Ausgirl, I'm new to this message board, too, and have tried to send you a personal message but it's not clear how I can do so. Hopefully, someone will advise us.

  • There isn’t a PM facility on this board. One of you needs to give the other your e-mail (break it up to avoid spammers) or give some other means of contact eg Facebook.

I had a quick look for Andrew Roney/Rooney’s death in Ireland.  I didn’t find one. Death registration only started on 1.1.1864 so it looks as though he died before that. His father in law made his will in May 1854 when Andrew was obviously alive but didn’t amend it at any time, so that might suggest Andrew was still alive in Feb 1861. So perhaps died some time between Feb 1861 - Dec 1863?

  • It's possible Andrew died pre 1861 and that his father in law never bothered to amend or re-make his will. If a beneficiary in a will   pre-deceases the person making the will, the relevant assets just go back in the pot, and it isn't essential to do anything. But if your daughter has been widowed and has dependant children, many a father might revise his will to take account of that. But maybe not in this case.
