Francis Joseph O'Brien was born in July of 1895 in Quilty. His mother was Ellen Foran, daughter of Honora and James Foran. He was baptized Francis Foran and his mother married Cornelius O'Brien on September 26, 1900. Cornelius was the son of John O'Brien. Cornelius drowned in a fishing accident on October 17, 1906.
Francis arrived in the United States on July 22, 1908 where he lived with his uncle, Michael Foran, in Binghamton, New York. His mother and two brothers, Patrick and John, joined him in New York in April of 1921. Francis married twice (his first wife died at a relatively young age) and had five children.
