Garret and Julia's marriage certificate lists Garrett as aged 28 at the time of his marriage and that he was a widower. (These ages do not agree with the ages listed in the census returns for 1861, 1871 and 1881) Julia's age is given as 22. His occupation is given as "labourer" and his address as 19 White Heart Place, Poplar. Julia was living at 9 White Heart Place, Poplar. Garrett and Julia made their marks on the marriage register. Garrett's father is listed as Garrett Fitzgerald and Julia's as Andrew Sullivan. Witnesses were Mary Crawley and Cornelius Leary. They were married in the Roman Catholic Church, Gate St. Poplar.
The 1861 census for England lists Garrett and Julia as living at 1 Katharine Place, All Saints, Tower Hamlets, Poplar, London. Garrett's age is listed as 40 and his occupation is given as 'dock labourer'. Julia's age is given as 30. They have children Mary aged 2 and Michael aged 3 months, both born Poplar.
The 1871 census lists Garrett as "Jerold" Fitzgerald residing in Poplar, Middlesex. His occupation is given as 'dock labourer'. HIs age is given as 52 and Julia's as 33. Apart from his wife and children other members of the household include Ann Shaw aged 65, a laundress born in Cork, Ireland and Ann's son Daniel aged 38 and born Poplar. Daniel is listed as unemployed, unmarried and "afflicted".
The 1881 census lists the family as living at 3 Katherine Place, London. Garrett's occupation is listed as 'dock labourer'. His age is given as 60 and Julia's as 50. All the children are listed as being born in Poplar, London in the various census records.
After the 1881 census things become a little bit unclear, however the 1891 census lists a Garrett Fitzgerald, fisherman aged 60 & born Ireland, living at 14 Bromley Cottages, Bromley, St Leonards. His wife is Julia Ann, aged 60 and born Ireland, and they have their son John, a stevedore at dock L, aged 17 and born Poplar, London. Although the ages for Garrett & Julia don't tally, this seems to be the correct family.
The 1901 has a William Fitzgerald living with Garrett & Julia's daughter Margaret and her husband James. William is listed as the widowed father, a dock worker/stevedore aged 60. He is listed as being born in Ireland, and would appear to be Garrett. It is uncertain as to why there would be such a mix-up with names and ages.
The death index for England lists a Garrett Fitzgerald, aged 64, having died in the Jul/Sept quarter of 1903. Considering that the 1901 census lists Margaret's father as aged 60, it appears that this is the death record for our Garrett.
None of the three Garretts listed in the 1841 and 1851 census returns for England fit the data of our Garrett so it appears that he may have migrated from Ireland after 1851.
A possible death for Garrett is listed in the English BD&M indexes as occuring in 1903 in Poplar, London. The estimated year of birth is given as 1839, however, not even close to the 1821 listed in the census returns. This is the only death listed between 1837 and 1915
