In 1841 Judith Doherty (nee Purcell) gave birth to her second child, James. He was baptized on the 4th July. His father John Doherty (Dogherty) was a native of Moville, Donegal. On the 8th October 1856 the Doherty family, John, Judith and their sons Martin, James and John set sail on board the Marion bound for Port Adelaide, South Australia. They arrived in Port Adelaide on the 17th January 1857.

By 1861 John, Judith (now Julia) and two of their sons James and John have settled in Melborne, Victoria. In this same year James began teaching with the Victorian Education Department. His 'Teaching Service Rocords' shows that during his 16 years of service he taught at 14 schools. In 1863 he married Elizabeth Higgens. They had eight children between 1863 and 1876.

In about 1877 James leaves Victoria to teach in New Zealand. In about 1881 he returns to South Australia accompanied by Edith McKinley of Blenheim, New Zealand. He resumed his teaching career, this time with the South Australian Education Department. Between 1881 and 1906 he taught at 9 schools. James and Edith have 7 children. The first in 1881 and the seventh in 1905.

James and Edith married in 1911 after the death of his first wife. James died in Prospect, South Australia in August 1920. He was buried in the West Terrace, Adelaide, cemetery.
