James Grey Crawford was born in Hillsborough, County Antrim, Ireland, January 6, 1819. James was a carriage maker. He married Eleanor Georgina Battersby in Dublin, Ireland, about 1849 or 1850. Eleanor's parents were not happy with her marrying James. They disinherited her so the couple decided to come to America, settling in New York. The family rumor was that Eleanor was aristocratic and went to Ireland and England often to see her family. Before leaving for America, James and Eleanor had one daughter, Eleanor Georgina Crawford, born on Novembr 23, 1851 on Great Brunswich Street, Dublin, Ireland.
