James was born on a farm in Drumnamether, Mullaghbrack, County Armagh.
He married Sara Ann Quinn 10 Feb 1861.
James and Sara Ann had 2 children in Ireland before moving to Coatbridge, Scotland around 1864 where James went to work in the coalmines.
In Scotland James had 3 more children but by 1869 Sara Ann and 4 of their children had died.
James remarried 30 Jan 1873 with Catherine McCourt, They moved from Coatbridge to Blantyre where Cathering gave birth to a son. On the 2nd of July 1879 James was killed in an explotion at the coal mine where he worked. His surviving son from his marriage to Sara Ann was also in the pit at the time of the explosion but survived the blast.
