James (1862-1914) was the son of James McGoldrick (1819-1903) and Bridget Kimmet (1834-c1879), who were married 25 Jul 1853 in the Killenummery R.C. Church near Dromahair, County Leitrim. The elder James was a farmer in the Fawn townland of Dromahair.

James emigrated to America around 1885. In South Philadelphia, James lived among many family from the old village in Ireland, including at least four siblings (Anna, Owen, Thomas, and Bridget), as well as a large number of aunts, uncles, and cousins from his mother's side. James worked as a general laborer and at one point was employed in a coal yard.

James married Margaret Hart (1872-1956) in 1892. They perhaps became acquainted through her older brother, John, who lived with James at the time of the 1890 Philadelphia city directory. Though Margaret was born in Glasgow, her family came from Dromahair - she being the second of five children, with only her aforementioned brother, John, having been born in Ireland.

James, as well as his sisters Bridget and Anna (m. Mulligan), fell ill and died during the early half of the 1910s.

  • I am wondering if my great grandmother Bridget McGolrick Banks might be James' sister. She never left ireland and I last found her in the 1911 census and do not know when she died. She owned land in Sriff and her son Peter Banks and daughter Kate Banks remained in ireland with her while the rest of the Banks clan went to Boston, Mass.

My DNA is at Ancestry and gedmatch  A237799 if there is the possibility of shared DNA?

  • Hi Mike. Bridget, the sister of my James, died single in Philadelphia in 1912. Bridget McGoldrick, of Shancorrick, daughter of John McGoldrick, married Pat Banks on 4 Mar 1889 in the Killargue parish of Dromahair, County Leitrim. I checked GEDmatch and you don't match to either my mother (maiden name McGoldrick) or her 1st cousin, also a McGoldrick. I hope this helps. - Greg

Hoping you might find a match somewhere.... also I have found the Scanlon surname connects to McGoldrick.  If you want you can send me your McGoldrick Kit #'s and I can check further.

I have many of the Banks family members from Mass. completly researched but have not found many McGoldrick's. My Bridget married John Banks probably before 1858 but it is to early for church records and their first born was Patrick W.  no birth record because he was just before recording dates.
