My great-great grandfather James Rahelly was born in Kerry in 1821 and moved to Tipperary Town in 1839 where he married, had a family, opened a business and ultimately died in 1871. He married my 2x great grandmother Catherine (Kate) Doherty in 1844 and they had three children, Bridget, Michael and Charles. Kate died in 1855 and James married Mary Healy in 1857. They had five children together.
James opened a shoe store at 68 Main Street in 1839 which is still in business today as O'Rahelly Sports. After James died in 1871, the business went to his second wife Mary and, subsequently, Michael and Charles left for New York where they opened a shoe store in Brooklyn.
