Migrated to/Born in USA
James left Ireland around 1850 and settled in Salem, Massachusetts, in the USA. He may have sailed first to Nova Scotia and crossed the border into Maine, as his older brother Michael did. It is not known whether the siblings left Ireland together or singly.
In 1854 he married Mary Neil. Two of their children, Anna Mariah and Thomas F. lived to adulthood.
In 1855 he petitioned to become a US citizen.
Michael was a shoemaker. He served in the 9th Massachusetts Infantry of the Union Army in the Civil War. He was disabled and had difficulty walking afterward.
