Emigrated to Australia with his mother, Bridget, as Jeremiah Ryan, per Admiral Lyons. Arrived in Sydney 15 September 1857.

Brother of Winifred and Johanna Ryan, who emigrated as Irish Orphan Girls per John Knox in 1850.

He trained and became an early lay teacher in NSW Catholic schools, entering the teaching service in 1864.

Sometime after 1867 Jeremiah restored the 'O' to his surname.
