Jeremiah R. O'Connell of St. Paul, dies at the Johnston home in this city at 10 o'clock Saturday morning (18 Jul 1914), at the advanced age of 81.
Mr. O'Connell, his grandson Frank Geehan, also of St. Paul, and C.O’Flynn of Cedar Lake, drove in from the O'Flynn home on Friday afternoon to visit the latter's daughter, Mrs. T.J. Johnston.
Mr. O'Connell was the chief entertainment that evening up to eleven o'clock, when he became suddenly ill with intestinal trouble, and gradually weakened, death following shortly.
Deceased was a pioneer resident of Credit River, settling there in the early fifties, and was one of the first blacksmiths to locate in Scott County. A few years later he moved to St. Paul, where he was employed by J.J. Hill in the shops of the St. Paul, Manitoba and Northern Railway Co. He worked at this trade up to four or five years ago. His brothers, sons and grandsons are all mechanics, some of them being among the best iron workers in the Twin Cities. His son, Pat O'Connell was foreman of the American Hoist & Derrick Company's foundry up to the time of his death a year ago.
Mr. O'Connell is survived by seven children, they are Mrs. John Geary, Mrs. Nicholas Pottgieser, Mrs Joseph McCauley, Mrs. Harry Chapple, Steven O'Connell and Austin O'Connell. He is also survived by 68 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. His wife proceeded him to the grave seven years ago.
The remains were shipped to St. Paul on Saturday evening and the funeral was held from the Cathedral at 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning. Interment was in Calvary cemetery.
