Born in 1823 in Co. Kerry (per his son). Granddaughter says he was born in Waterford, but we think it was Waterville, Kerry. John emigrated to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1845. Had a son, Michael, by a first wife whose name we do not know. Remarried in 1851 to Bridget McGuire in St. John and had several children by her. Gertrude says that John also had a sister named Jane.
In St. John, John B. ran a shipyard with his bro-in-law, James McGuire, and learned the black smithing trade. He also ran a tavern/inn there.
About 1867-1868 John and family moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where the last of his children, Joseph, was born in 1869. While there John B Carey might have run a chandlery shop (ship's supplies), as city directories indicate.
In 1870 John and family moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania where he worked as a blacksmith for a railroad company.
In 1882 John and family moved to Chicago, Illinois where he lived with (or near) his daughter Margaret Carey Connery and her husband William.
In March 1895, John died in Chicago and is buried there. His death cert is very vague about his age, saying only that he was born between 1815 and 1825.
