Place & Date of Marriage | John's wife is Catharine Reynolds (possibly Mary Catharine) from Co. Leitrim per her obit. I do not know the specific parish but Leitrim for certain as I am DNA connected to many Reynolds from that area. Married in NY 1849 per census info.
Place & Date of Marriage | John married Catharine Reynolds in New York, USA in 1849. I do not have a specific location but I believe it was in NY City
Number of Siblings | John had 4 siblings. I am DNA matched to their descendants. Also, I believe an Aunt Bridget Crofton may have emigrated with them as well. Could be a cousin I have not found any data for Bridget in the US. This info is from another reseacher
Names of Siblings | John Crofton had 4 siblings: George b. 1826, Ann b. 1829, Margaret b. 1830, Catherine b.1835. All sibling were living in Blooming Grove, NY during the 1850 Federal Census (except George who was in prison in Ossing, NY).
Number of Children | 8 | |
First Child | Richard Bernard Crofton is their 1st child born 23 Feb. 1849 in New York. He is my great grandfather. In 1856, the family leaves NY and settles in Alton, Illinois where they stay for the remainder of their lives. James and Mary are also born in NY.
Names of Siblings | Richard b. 1849, James b. 1851, Mary b. 1854, Ann b. 1857, Margaret b. 1859, John b. 1863, Peter b. 1865, Rosana b. 1868. The first 3 born in NY all the other children were born in Alton, Illinois.
Place of Death | Alton, Illinois.
New Type | This is a hunch but I think John is from the Leitrim area (which is where id wife Catharine is from). All of John's siblings are together in the census in 1850 and 1855. After that most settle in Illinois, except George who lived in Kansas
Father (First Name/s and Surname) | I have no idea. But John names his first child Richard. Richard names is first child John. So the naming tradition seems to be in play. I think it's possible that John's father is Richard. His sisters also name their sons Richard at least one did. |
