John was born in 1797 in Clogherbrien, the son of Patrick & Mary Fitzgerald. He married Mary Barton (born 1796 in Clogherbrien) in 1816 in the same Parish - they are my 4th great-grandparents.
They had 11 children: Patrick, Elizabeth, Maurice, John, Denis, Mary, Thomas, Ellen, Bridget, Gerald & Catherine.
John & Mary Fitzgerald emigrated with their whole family to South Australia and arrived in Port Adelaide on 1 October 1840 on the Mary Dugdale. They were very early arrivals to the State, as SA was only settled in 1836 and the Mary Dugdale was one of the first ships with Irish settlers
John died 14 January 1862 in Adelaide and Mary died 12 December 1874 in Hamley Bridge, both in South Australia
Their daughter, Elizabeth (born Clogherbrien October 1818) is my 3rd great-grandmother.
Elizabeth married Thomas Evans (born 1817 in Ballymullan, Count Kerry - the son of George Evans & Julia Day) on 2 June 1840 in Clogherbrien - the couple immediately emigrated to South Australia with her family.
Their family settled in Upper Wakefield and raised a family of 8 children - George, Mary Anne, Ellen, John, Julia (my 2nd great-grandmother), Thomas, Elizabeth & Patrick.
Thomas died 28 August 1866 and Elizabeth died 20 July 1881, both in Upper Wakefield in SA.
Julia married Daniel Horgan on 9 October 1892 in Mintaro SA and they had a family of 1 daughter and 9 sons - their son Denis Maurice Horgan (my great-grandfather) married Catherine Walsh
My grandmother, Julia Catherine (Kit) Horgan married David Patrick Dowd - and their daughter Clare (my mum) married Raymond Desmond Mangan.
These families all resided in South Australia, as do I (Jennifer Clare Mangan) to this day.
