John was born in 1840 in Coolderry, Tipperary, the youngest of eight children of John Hogan and Hannah Breen. John senior died in 1847, then in 1856 his widow Hannah emigrated to Tasmania, Australia with 15-year-old John and three of his sisters; Catherine (Kate), Mary and Johanna, per the ship 'Alice Walton'. The eldest sister Sarah was already living and working in Launceston, and sponsored their passage.
The family lived at Westbury, 33 km outside Launceston before the siblings married and settled in other areas. John leased farm land locally and in 1874 he married Honora Callaghan; they moved to farm at Turner's Marsh, north east of Launceston. The family home was 'Glenmore' where they raised eight children, unfortunately Honora died in 1887 after giving birth to the youngest, Martin. John never remarried; he continued farming, purchasing more acreage around Turner's Marsh and Karoola. He was a successful orchardist and grew large crops of potatoes to supply markets in Launceston.
John died in 1914 aged 74 and was buried in the small Catholic cemetery on the hill overlooking Karoola. He has many descendants in Australia, with some still living in the Karoola area.
