John Leahy was said to be from Carrig, Fermoy, Cork. He was born about 1829. In 1851 he was living in Taiback, Port Talbot, Wales, where he married Ellen Oddley [Audley, O'Daily or O'Dell??]].
According to family stories he had 4 [or 6?] sons, or 4 brothers who emigrated to America.
His son, also named John, was born in Port Talbot, Wales, 1st February 1852, according to his Royal Artillery army records. It has not been possible to identify John Leahy senior in UK census records, only from a marriage certificate. He may have even returned to Ireland after his son John left for India 1871, for 30 years army service there.
