John Patrick was born in New Castle, PA on 14 Mar 1891. When he was 14 months old, his Mother, Elizabeth Traynor Carlin and her infant daughter died as a result of complications of childbirth. His Father, John Charles Carlin, sent John Patrick and his older sister, Mary Catherine, to Belfast(Victoria/County Down) to live with relatives.The two children were returned to Ireland with the help of John Charles' younger unmarried brother, Bernarn Carlin, the only family John Charles had in the US. John Patrick lived with Francis Carlin, brother of John Charles, at 54 Middlepath St.
From the time he was old enough, John Patrick worked in the shipyard of Harland and Wolff as a "rivet boy" until at the age of 16. He returned to the US at that point, lying about his age to gain passage. After his return to the US he went to work with his older brother, William, an established plumber. William was the only sibling who was not sent to Ireland after his mother's death. John Patrick went on to become a pipefitter on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
