Migrated to/Born in Australia

Margaret was my great-great grandmother who was an orphan who was shipped with her sister Binny to Hobart,Tasmania (Van Dieman's Land), departing Dublin to Plymouth on 4 July 1851. They were put on board "Calcutta" and reached Hobart 2 November 1851. Margaret was placed in employment with a Thomas Pascoe (?) on 10 November. She married my great-great grandfather James Drummond (a freed convict born in Scotland) on 5 December 1853 in the Church of St.Joseph, Hobart Town. They had eight children (4 born in Tasmania and 4 born in New Zealand. About 1873 the family emigrated to the South Island, New Zealand. James Drummond built up a sawmill business in Newman, Eketahuna, Wairarap. He died 23 April 1900. Margaret survived him, dying 11 October 1907 in Newman where they are both buried.

A record of a baptisms record for a Margaret Hynes born 1828 and baptised 16 May 1828 is in "Ireland Catholic Parish Registers"  Father Edmund Hynes, Mother Margaret O'Donoghue on Ancestry site. I presume this is my Margaret Hynes. I have copy of their Marriage record and death notice.

Her and her sister is mentioned in the following production:From Clare to Van Diemen’s Land: Some forgotten Mothers of Tasmania by Michael MacMahon

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1828 (circa)
Date of Death 11th Oct 1907

  • I have recently been researching the godparents and witnesses of my ancestors who came to Van Diemans Land / Tasmania  in the 1850s  One very close  (relation/friend's) surname was Hines/Hynes/Hinds !!  Her name was Margaret too but came as a single woman married a John Maloney in Launceston.

Where were you able to locate the book From Clare to Van Diemans Land?
