Mary Anne Henry, daughter of Pat Henry and Mary (nee Henry) of Carrowcrory, was born on March 17, 1890.
On April 6, 1922, at Keash Church, near Ballymote, Mary Ann Henry of Battlefield married Tom Flatley (of Kilmovee, Co. Mayo) in her home parish of Toomour, Co.Sligo. Her father, Pat Henry, was deceased by this time.
Tom Flatley was a 'farmer' and an Irish-speaker (east Mayo which would have been a breac Gaeltacht in the 1800’s).
The couple setttled in Co. Sligo. Their son, Michael James Flatley (1927-2015) emigrated to the US in 1947 and settled in Chicago, Illinois where he established a successful construction business.
John Higgins, of Culfadda (1st cousin once removed of Mary Anne Henry) recalls: “She was extremely nationalistic. For a person who had only primary school education she had a great ability with words. She wrote a number of poems which I now have in my possession”.
It appears Mary Ann Henry was very involved in the Republican movement. She was a member of Cumann na mBan, the female support group of the IRA, and would have travelled widely around Connacht at the time of the ‘troubles’.
