Hello. My maternal great grandmother was Mary Clarke. I have researched and found a lot of my mother Patricia Donnelly's Donnelly family. Mary Clarke was Mary Donnelly by marriage and lived all her life in house 7 of the townland of Greaghnadarragh with husband Patrick Donnelly. They had 11 children and I am sure Rose was the first, only one child Bernard is unknown to me on his birth date. I cannot trace any record of Mary Clarke other than her family as recorded on her marriage Record that I have used as her profile. It was obtained from rootsireland.ie. Her date of birth and death were on her death certificate that I discovered on Irish Genealogy ie. The 1901 census from the National Archives also gives her residence and age on house 7 Greaghnadarragh. I have always believed that her father John Clarke was the tenant of house 8 Greaghnadarragh as listed with his brother Patrick on house 9 in the Griffiths valuation records. My great grandfather Patrick obtained the occupancy for house 8 a year before marrying Mary Clarke. I cannot find any census occupancies for Coppanagh to see if they had a farm on the townland as well. Any leads to Mary Clarke and her parents would be great. Her mother Margaret Clarke nee McMahon had another child Thomas Clarke who was present at her death in 1911 in Greaghnadarragh. He was also the occupier of House 9 Greaghnadarragh for a while until Patrick took that one over as well. House 8 is still on the Bailieborough to Loghanlea mountain road. It used to double as a general store. Please help if you can.

  • Hello. My great grandmother Mary Clarke married my great grandfather Patrick Donnelly on the 28th of October 1865 in Kingscourt Catholic Church a couple of years after he returned from America and settled in the townland of Greaghnadarragh, a mile or so east of Bailieborough, County Cavan. They had eleven children born to them on the same farm in house Number 7. Their nickname in the Donnelly families was the Porras. I have records of all but one of their children namely Bernard Donnelly who I know for certain emigrated to and remained in Brooklyn, New York passing away in 1941. His year of death is only through handed down family knowledge not by a record. My great grandmother Mary Clarke is very difficult to trace. My only knowledge is from her marriage certificate which reads that she was from the next townland of Coppanagh and that her father was John Clarke and mother Margaret McMahon. John Clarke I believe was the same John Clarke that my great grandfather Patrick Clarke took the occupancy of 8 Greaghnadarragh, a house come general store on the roadside. The building still stands today on the Bailieborough to Edennagully road. This house remained in the Porra Donnelly hands until the death of Ellen, the last of the eleven children in the 1960's. Any information on Mary Clarke and her ancestors would help a lot and any information on her son Porra Bernard Donnelly would be amazing.

  • Correction to previous comment. I wrote that my my great grandfather Patrick Clarke took over the occupancy of house and farm 8 Greaghnadarragh from John Clarke. I should have written my great grandfather Patrick Donnelly took over the occupancy.
