Michael Carroll 1805
Back to ListMichael Carroll was born in Oran, Roscommon around 1805. At the age of 20 he joined the Rifle Brigade in Dublin. He served in Malta and the Ionian Islands. He married Bridget Henry in 1838 in Greenwich. His father was William Carroll, a butcher and his mother Mary Carroll, nee Keefe. The Catholic record indicates his parents were Irish.
Michael, Bridget and daughter Mary were on the census in St Woolos, Newport, Wales in 1841 with fellow rifle brigade member. Thomas Wier and his wife, Margaret (nee Carroll and married Newport 1841, later census says she was from Kings County) shared the billet.
Children: Mary 1839 Woolwich, Margaret (c1845 Dover), John 1844 Guernsey, Jane 1846 Guernsey, Frances 1851 at sea aboard the Pyrenees, William 1853 Fremantle, George 1854 Fremantle (d 1854), Elizabeth 1856 Fremantle and Frederick Fremantle 1858. (suspect there may have been a Samuel, making 5 children with them on the Pyrenees)
Both Michael and Thomas were pensioned with other Rifle Brigade members in Aug 1846, both returning to Guernsey. Michael and Bridget went to Edenderry, Kings County at the end of May 1848. Frances 1851 baptism certificate says that his parents, William Carroll and Mary Keefe, are from the parish of Edenderry in Kings County (Offaly).
Michael was an Enrolled Pensioner Guard in Fremantle, Western Australia. Following Bridget's death he moved to Adelaide south Australia where he died in 1877.
