Born in Fedamore, Limerick and was the sixth of eight children born to Patrick Cavanagh and Ellen Browne.
Michael emigrated to Argentina in 1889 with his first cousin, Catherine (Kitty), and her husband, Michael Ahern and their seven children. All were aboard "City of Dresden" steamship and sailed to Buenos Aires. "The Dresden Affair" was denounced in Parliment, as Irish shipping agents had lied to their desperate countrymen saying they "would have houses to live in, seed to sow, machinery to work with, and the most fertile land in the world to farm." All these promises did not exist and many died during this time.
Michael returned to the British Isles, but went to England and settled in Gainsborough. He married Ellen Maria King and together they had eight children.
