Michael emigrated to New York about 1887. He was a widower when he married Violet Hinge in 1905. They met in a boarding house where Michael lived and she was employed as a cook. They had two surviving children, John and Violet, one grandchild, and seven great-grandchildren. Michael retired from many years of employment as a valet for one or two private residents. He was fortunate enough to retain employment during the Great Depression.
