Michael Lahy (Leahy) was born about 1792. According to his Australian death certificate he was the son of John Lahy and Alice Cummins (Comans?). His surname was at times in Australia pronounced 'Lackey'. In 1815 a dispensary in Ballagh was requisitioned as a barracks to accommodate 'Peelers'. A large group of dissatisfied Irish men gathered on the night of September 7 and destroyed the building. Within 3 months Michael and twelve other men were arrested. They were tried in Clonmel in January 1816 and transported to Australia on the convict vessel 'Surrey'. Michael was listed as a farmer, 5'9" tall, with a fair, ruddy, freckled complexion, sandy brown hair and light grey eyes. On arrival in Australia he was assigned to work for respected landowners and Michael became respected in his own right and received an early pardon. He became a landowner in the Mudgee district of New South Wales, married Mary Ann Thurston in 1833 and had nine children: Mary Ann, Catherine, Alice, John, Michael, William, Matthew, Jane and Amelia. Michael died on 1 June 1859 and was buried at his property 'Uamby'.
