Michael Mansfield was the son of William Mansfield and Mary Draddy. A native of Mt. (J)Uniacke, 6 miles from Youghal in County Cork, Michael was born in 1817.
Michael's first wife was Honora (Norry Foley). The marriage took place in Killeagh. He and Norry had three known children; Mary baptized 29 Mar 1842, Catherine E. baptized 29 Apr 1844 and Ellen baptized 4 Jun 1846. Honora died, either in giving birth to Ellen or shortly thereafter. Ellen died prior to 1852.
Michael married Mary Keeffe in 24 Feb 1848 in Killeagh. The witnesses were John White and Julia Curren. Michael and Mary had one son, WIlliam, born and baptized 1 Feb 1850 in Killeagh. Michael, his second wife Mary, and children Mary, Catherine, and William, immigrated to the United States, arriving in NY 29 Mar 1852. They had two more sons, all born in Manhattan, NY; John b.1852 and Parick b.15 May 1855. Mary was apparently pregnant with John at the time they immigrated.
By July, William and Mary had died of two different forms of Tuberculosus. Due to the highly contagious nature of Tuberculosus, it was necessary for the family to move each time. Their son, John died 30 Aug 1857. Michael also died in 1857. By 1858 the only surviving members of the family were Catherine, her stepmother Mary, and her half brother, Patrick.
Michael Mansfield died 21 Mar 1857 at 144 Cherry St., Manhattan, NY. He was buried with his children at Calvary Cemetery in a family plot owned by his cousin, David Draddy. He was listed as a laborer at the time of his death. Wife Mary, daughter Catherine and son, Patrick moved to Yonkers NY, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
