Left Ireland in 1840 with his wife Johanna Brennan and their daughter Ellen. They settled in Bytown (Ottawa) Ontario, Canada. His wife died probably at Gros Iles, Quebec upon arrival in Canada. He remarried Anastasia O'Brien late of Ireland in 1841. What they faced in Canada (being a new country) was probably equally challenging but in different ways. They were given land in rural areas and were pobably ill prepared for the harsh winters found in Canada.
Patrick and Anastasia had their first child in 1842 named Thomas.
