Patrick Carroll emigrated to the United States with his family arriving in New Orleans on June 25, 1849. He was born in Limerick on December 28, 1830 to Edmund Carroll and Christine Quinlan. Edmund, Christine and Patrick, James, Michael, John and Mary all arrived aboard the packet ship Cato. Edmund had an uncle, Ed Casey, who lived in New Orleans and helped the family out while living there. Around 1850, Illinois offered land grants along the Illinois Central RR. The family travelled up the Mississippi and finally settled in Bunker Hill, Illinois.
