Patrick enlisted at Ballinasloe, County Galway 21st November 1823 aged 17 years. On his military records his birth place was recorded as Louvan (which does not appear to be an identifiable place name). He was enlisted to the 58th Foot Regisment serving between 1823 and 1845 mainly in Ceylon, East Indies. Patrick married Susanna Fitzpatrick in County Cavan 1843. He then served as a Fencible in Onehunga, New Zealand arriving on the Oriental Queen with Susanna and three of their children. Three more children were born in New Zealand. Patrick Crew died 28 February 1865 in Onehunga.
