Pierce Butler was born in Knocktopher, Kilkenny to James Butler, a weaver, and his wife (name unknown) in 1813. He joined the HEIC Army in 1834 and served 19 years in India. He married an indo-briton widow named Frances Graham in 1843 and they had three children together James (1845), Bridget (1847) and Pierce (1849). The youngest child died at 7 months old. Pierce left the army in 1853 and he and the two remaining children left India for New Zealand via Melbourne, Australia. He spent the next 13 years in Auckland and Nelson before returning to Ireland in January 1867. He remarried 10 months after arriving back in Ireland to Margaret Cuddihy/Cudaher at St Brendan's Church, Hugginstown, Kilkenny. He died at Newmarket, Kilkenny in 1888 and his widow Margaret died in 1895, also at Newmarket.
