5th great grandmother

When REBECCA ASHTON was born in 1760 in Ireland, her father, JAMES, was 32, and her mother, ELIZABETH, was 31. She married GEORGE BARBER in 1785 in Washington, New York. They had seven children in 12 years. She died on January 6, 1804, in Washington, New York, at the age of 44, and was buried in Cambridge, New York.

James Ashton (6th great grandfather)(circa 1728 - 1802) is supposed to have come to America from Ballingran (Balyagran? Ballingarrane?), Limerick to Ash Grove, NY, with his brother Thomas in mid-1700s. Rebecca’s brother, John Ashton born in Ireland July 8, 1763. Was 9 when came to America with James and Elizabeth. Married to either Elizabeth Cole or Elizabeth Stuart?

Thomas Ashton from Ballingran, Ireland, settled in 1769 in that part of White Creek since known as Ashgrove. He had been associated with the Wesleyan movement in Ireland and was greatly moved by the fervor of John Wesley. By an unusual coincidence Philip Embury, the earliest exponent of Methodism in America, had a large grant of land in the north part of White Creek. The two men met and straightway planted a Methodist Church in the Ashton neighborhood. James was Presbyterian, not Methodist.
