Reginald Clare-Hart was born in the civil parish of Scarriff, County Clare on the 11th of June 1848.
As a young man, Clare-Hart enlisted in the British military services.
He was educated at Cheltenham College before receiving a commission with the Royal Engineers.
When he wa 30 years old, Clare-Hart was stationed as a lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers in the Second Anglo-Afghan War.
On the 31st of January 1879 he was in Bazar Valley in Afghanistan when he exposed himself to enemy fire by running 1,200 yards to rescue a wounded soldier. He successfully brought the man to safety, even though he was under fire from at least 3 different directions.
For his bravery on that day, Clare-Hart was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross.
He also went on th efight in the Second Boer War in South Africa. He eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey and was awarded a knighthood.
Clare-Hart died in Bournemouth on the 18th of October 1931 and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Dorset.
