The Rev. Peter Mahon, Dean of Elphin (1722-1739) was the progenitor of the Cavetown branch of the Mahons. Peter was the 4th son of Nicholas Mahon, Esq., (d.1680) of Ballinemly, Co. Roscommon, and brother of John Mahon, Esq., of Strokestown. From his father, he inherited the lands of Emlaglansney, Clanroughan, Loughboy and Barnaglas in co. Roscommon.
Dean Mahon married Catherine Gore of Newtowngore Co. Mayo and the couple set up residence at Cavetown. The house of "Mahon Esq." is clearly marked at Cavetwon in the Taylor & Skinner map of 1777. It is also mentioned in 'The Postchaise Companion' (1786) as being sited between two loughs opposite Eastersnow Church. The fine landscaping of Cavetown is attributed to him.
The Rev. Peter Mahon was succeeded at Cavetown by his son Ven. Arthur Mahon (c.1715-1788) who was Archdeacon of Elphin from 1743 onwards.
