Richard A. Thompson was born in 1742 in Ulster, Ireland. Unfortunately, the county in which he was born is unknown at this time. Richard immigrated to the North Carolina where he served as a corporal in Colonel Abraham Buford's regiment in the American Revolutionary War. After the war he settled in Lawrence County, Kentucky. His children settled on both the Kentucky and Virginia (now West Virginia) sides of the Big Sandy River.
The 1742 birth date for Richard comes from a document written by Richard himself in 1822 sent to Edward Burgess in which he states his age to be "about" 80.
