Samuel Ferguson was born in the year 1788, three Irish miles (5 English miles) from the town of Cootehill, in the Townland of Drummartin, County of Cavan, Ireland. The first thirty-three years of his life were spent in that district. In 1817 he married Sarah Hooey, of the adjoining Townland of Kilnacrew, and settled within that area for the next four years, where two children, James and Jane were born to them.
In 1821 Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson decided to cross the ocean and try their fortune in the New World. They landed at the town of Port Hope, on Lake Ontario. Owing to illness and expense, their resources had become badly depleted, consequently Mr. Ferguson remained with his wife and family in Port Hope during the next year, adding to their resources.
In 1822 he located in the Township of Cavan in the County of Durham, where he purchased 200 acres of land, Lot 17, concession 11.
