  • I remember a Simon Regan from that townland alive and well circa 1960s and possibly later. There are at least 2 Regan tombstones in Killashee graveyard - both will feature in Longford Historical Society's  forthcoming book on the memorail inscriptions with jottings of Killashee parish. Can you elaborate on your Simon's career - why did he get jail,  Etc? Thanks, LB

  • Hi Luke, thanks for your reply, in September 1888 Simon Regan (age 65) was sentenced to six weeks in Sligo jail for "TAKING FORCIBLE POSSESSION OF A HOUSE & LAND" at Derryohill where he had been living since the 1850's, however, in the aftermath he did continue to farm & raise his family there, in fact the Simon Regan you knew of was his grandson, (my uncle) was also raised there.
There is another prison record from 1857 which shows he was arrested on a bench warrant for the manslaughter of James Connor but I can find no further details of that case or whether he was actually convicted of anything. Simon died in 1891 and is apparently buried in Shrule.
