My grandfather Thomas Williams was born in Atlantic City New Jersey. He came to Belfast and Joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1901. He served in second Boer war and was decorated, then Khartoum.
Thomas must have had relatives around Belfast. His father was John Thomas Williams Atlantic City NJ 1858 married to Mary Cameron 1856 born Pensilvania. Further research takes me back to Thomas Williams 1818 in New Jersey he was born in Ireland. It's a puzzle why my grandfather came to Ireland and joined the army. He met my grandmother in Glasgow and they married in 1910 in Glasgow. I think John Thomas, his father, remained in Belfast and was a widower but that's just what I think.
Any help on finding my ancestors in Ireland or US would be appreciated. My grandfather and grandmother died young so my mother never knew anything. She used to say her father was Irish American and I couldn't figure this out but I have now.
