William Duff was one of 10 children (listed below) born to Michael Duff and Kate Duff (nee Ryan). All his siblings, with the exception of his first sister Elizabeth that died in infancy emigrated to America. William stayed to mind his parents. He was a member of Toomevara hurling team that were all ireland champions in 1910-11-12 and worked mainly as a farm labourer.
