My 3 x great grandfather William Merrigan was born about 1811 in Ireland. His father was Michael, mother as yet unknown.
Our family tradition has it that the family came from Clonmel in Tipperary but it seems it may have been the Bansha/Ballinleenty area about 23 miles away. There is also a parcel of land nearby known as 'Merrigan's field', which may or not be connected to our family.
William married Ann or Anne Keating, possibly from the Aherlow Valley in Co Tipperary, although I have no record of their marriage yet. Ann was born about 1809. I have no information about her family at all.
It seems they arrived in England between 1837 (when son James was born in Ireland) and 1841 (when Elisa was born in London). I have not found them on the 1841 census, so perhaps they had not arrived from Ireland until just after then or did not register. It is confusing as their third child, Joseph is shown as baptised in Bansha.
James was born in Ireland in 1837, he married Sarah Bensley in 1860. (see separate pages) He died between July and September 1896 in West Ham, Middlesex. His surname listed as Marrigan.
Elisa (Elizabeth) was born on 28 August 1841 in Shoreditch. Elizabeth married Patrick Bolan in 1863 and they emigrated to Australia in 1866. She died 29 December 1925 in Balmain, NSW
Joseph was christened 8 April 1843 in Bansha, Tipperary. There is also a Joshua on the 1851 census with the family, which shows he was born in London. Not sure whether there were one or two boys and neither seems to reappear after 1851.
Ann or Anne was born about 1848, she appears on the 1851 and 1861 census with her family but I have no record of her after that.
William was born on 2 April 1851 in Shoreditch, London. He married Julia Bensley 24 January 1881, after she died he married Mary Ann Stanton. He died on 24 December 1905 in Islington.
We visited the Church of Ireland in Bansha in 2009, unfortunately it was in the pouring rain and so we were not very successful in taking photos of the gravestones we found, especially as some were not very clear. We would be grateful if anyone knows whether there are any transcriptions of the memorials and where we can see a copy or can add any more information to our family history. Thank you
