An Bóthar aka Boher is an old placename that turns up frequently as an address in early 19th century records for Croghan (e.g Croghan RC Parish and Tithe Applotment Records). It can stump family researchers as it cannot be found on maps.

Bóthar (lit. cow crossing = road) refers to the townlands of Macnadille, Toormore, that sit upon a stretch of road between Croghan and Carrick-on-Shannon (across from Knockacorha).

In the Ordnance Survey Parish Namebooks, Toormore was recorded alias Boher [Down Survey: Tormore]. It also referenced Macnadille as “Lecarrow an Cashell in Boher” from the time of the James 1 Inquisitions [Down Survey: Mackenedela]

The 1749 Elphin Census, records 8 names in BOHER (for Toormore, not listed):

G Plunkett (RC) Farmer  |  JM Plunkett (RC) Cottier    |    J Lavin (RC) Cottier  |  MO McGrath (RC) Cottier   |  D McNamara (RC) Cottier   |   E McNeal  /Nial /Neil (RC) widow

  |  JM McNeal  (RC) Cottier    |   R McNeal (RC) Cottier

In 1815, baptising children in BOHER were:

Tom Dean & Ann Fahy  |  Malachy Conlon & Nora Carty  |  Jim Morahan (RIP Mar 1831) & Maud Dean /Finn  |  Dominic Morahan & Mary Kilalea (sp John Boyd & Ann Reynolds)   |  John Mulhern & Brid  Maxwell  |  Pat McGreevy (1755-1822) & Brid Beirne  |  Pat Redican/ Ratigan & Maud McGreevy

In 1831, baptising children in BOHER: Patrick McGreevy & Henrietta Quinn (neighbors McCabe & Dowd points to Toormore)

In  Feb 1833, married in BOHER: John McGreevy & Cath Lenaghan (witnessed by Cathal Higgins & Jane Sharkett... points to Toormore).

The 1835 Tithe Applotment Records lists 27 names in "Boher"  (no Macnadille / Toormore listed):

(Macnadille): John Corrigan [GV5a]   |  Widow Dean   |  Jim Devanny    |  Tom Fox   |  Owen Lavin   |  Pat Lavin   |  Matt McDermott    |  Widow McGreevy & Pat McGreevy [GV2a,3]  |  Tom Madden  |  Pat Morahan
(Toormore): Liam Casey  |  Tom Conolly  |  Cathal Higgins  |  John Judge  6a [GV6a]  |  Luke Kelly |  Cathal Kenny  |  Donncha Kenny  |  Mick Lyster  |  Mick Lavin  |  John McGreevy [GV2c]  |  Con McGreevy  [GV1b]  |  Pat McGreevy |  Tom McGreevy    |  Conor McGreevy  |  Pat McCabe  |  Martin Timon

Other BOHER family names (exempt from Tithes) show up later on Griffith's Valuation land records, under:

Toormore 1857:

Owen McGreevy [GV1a]    |    Myles McGreevy [GV2b]    |    Ed Lavin [GV2a]     |    John Lenaghan [GV4a]    |    Margaret Lenaghan [GV5a    |    Mick Dowd [GV6b]

Macnadille 1857

John Corrigan Jr [GV1a]    |    John Devanny [GV6]    |    Mick McDermott [GV7a]    |    John McGreevy [GV8,3a]    |    Pat McGreevy Jr [4a]    |    Eliza Killalea (GV8b)    |    Brid Regan (GV8a)    |    Mick Travers[GV9](8c)

So... researchers working backward from Griffith's Valuation records for Macnadille or Toormore, can avoid a brick wall by considering Boher records as well!

  • My great-grandmother, Mary, was born on 16th May 1866 to parents James and Anne McGrath. Three weeks later, Anne McGrath travelled several miles to the government centre in Carrick-on-Shannon to register this birth, the birth of her 6th child. This was a new experience for Anne since civil registration of births, deaths and marriages had only been introduced that year. Anne, as the informant for this birth, reported the relevant details and signed the birth certificate with her mark, the mark of the cross. She gave her husband’s profession simply as a ‘labourer’. James was most likely a ‘cottier’. She also reported her address, and place of birth as simply ‘Boher’, in the district of Aughrim, County Roscommon.

In September 1886, Grannie Mary migrated to Queensland, Australia on the single-funnel steamship "Jumna".

  • Thanks for this very helpful explanation of the place called "Boher"! On 14 Mar 1831, my 2x great grandparents John Lavin (likely from Tibohine Parish) and Brigid Regan (of Boher) were married in Croghan/Killucan parish. Their children were born in Tibohine Parish, and four emigrated to America, including my great grandfather Patrick Lavin, who lived first in Washington, DC, then Winchester, Virginia, and finally Cumberland, Maryland, USA.
