Castle Leslie is located near the village of Glaslough in Co. Monaghan. It stands on the Leslie Estate which has been in the family name since the 17th century.

In 1665 Glaslough Castle and Demesne was sold by Sir Thomas Ridgeway to the Bishop of Clogher, John Leslie.
-
The Bishop's son, Charles Leslie, stridently defended the Catholics and levelled bitter attacks on the penal laws (which deeply offended King William). Arrested for high treason, he escaped and fled to France. When King Billy died, George I pardoned him and ”let the old man go home to Glaslough to die’. His children were great friends of Dean Swift, who wrote:
Here I am in Castle Leslie
With rows and rows of books upon the shelves
Written by The Leslies
All about themselves.
-
In 1743, Charles Powell Leslie I took over the estate. He was elected MP for Monaghan in 1776 and represented the County of Monaghan in Grattan’s Parliament of 1783. Ahead of his time, he was all for taxing absentee landlords.
Castle Leslie is undoubtedly the finest country house in County Monaghan. It was built by John Leslie aka Sir John Leslie, 1st Baronet of Glaslough (d.1916) in 1875 on the site of a plantation castle and bawn.
Today it is a luxury 5-star hotel.
