The following information was provided by Mr Steve Dolan, Manager of The Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna, Co. Galway

The Clonmel Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £2,299. Clonmel Workhouse is unusual in that a pre-existing building was adapted to make it fit for purpose, one of only four Poor Law Unions in Ireland to do so. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 600 inmates, but census records show that the true number of inmates reached as high as 2,000 in 1849. In 1850 it was decided to build a new workhouse. This was opened in 1853 and was built to accomodate 1,200 inmates. The Clonmel Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Clonmel, Innislonaghty, Kilshelan, Lisronagh, Newchapel, and Temple Etny in Co. Tipperary, and Killaloan, Kilronan, Rathgormack, and Saint Marys in Co. Waterford.

The Clonmel Workhouse site is now a regional healthcare facility.

  • Hello,

I think your best bet to find Margaret would be to post on the Mesage Boards for Tipperary as more people will see it and be able to help you. If you know what civil parish she came from specifically then even better. There is also this link here http://tipperarystudies.ie/ which might point you in the right direction for some sources.

    I hope this helps.

    Good Luck!
