During the 1798 Rebellion, 640 men were massacred in Carlow town. They were buried in a large pit, which was then covered with quicklime. The site now consists of a large mound which is known as The Croppies Grave.
This memorial has been placed on the site to commemorate the loss of life during the 1798 Rebellion and to mark the place where the fallen were buried.
