Emo Court is located in the civil parish of Coolbanagher, Co. Laois. 

The house was constructed in 1790. It was designed by James Gandon, a well known architect at the time. 

The house was built in the neo-classical style. It was the ancestral home of the Earls of Portarlington. 

Phases of renovations have taken place at Emo Court in the 1830's, the 1860's, and the 1970's. 

The house is set in a large demense including impressively manicured gardens. 

Emo Court came into the owneship of the Jesuits in the 1930's. It was later sold to a man named Major Cholmeley-Harrison. In 1994 he gave Emo Court to the Irish public, who were represented by Mary Robinson. 

The house and grounds are now under the care of the Office of Public Works and they have been opened to the public.
